Graphic Design Internship
at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

More than a mere intern

As the sole graphic designer in the University’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), I was responsible for the vast majority of the graphical output for the office. From posters to social media I worked with teams of all disciplines to push forward our brand, and reach more students. It was here where I learned my advanced proficiency of Illustrator and InDesign, and also where I fostered my love for design as a communication medium!

Project: Getting Started in Research Booklet

Programs Used: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop

By far the largest project I undertook was a 50+ page booklet, advising students on how to get started in undergraduate research, complete with fun characters, pro-tips, resources, and interactive worksheets. Save for the social media logos at the end, the University of Illinois wordmark, and the fonts we normally used in our branding, every single asset in this document was designed and illustrated by myself, from the character illustrations, to the backgrounds, to the diagrams! After nearly a year’s worth of intensely collaborative effort between my coworkers and I, we’ve made a handy tool that will last the office several years.

Project: Celebrating Mentors

Programs Used: InDesign, Illustrator

This was part of a series of 60+ virtual e-mail “postcards” made to thank the research mentors of students who presented research in the University of Illinois’ Undergraduate Research Symposium. The postcard design was made in Adobe Illustrator, then was placed into InDesign so that data from an Excel document containing student messages could be individually overlayed via InDesign’s Data Merge feature, instantly generating dozens of editable cards through an automated process.

Project: Motivational Quotes

Programs Used: Illustrator

A collaboration with our social media department, I created several motivational quotes to post on our Instagram and Twitter accounts. Quotes were selected from different Illinois alumni who excelled in a variety of different fields, with the intent to inspire students who would come by our account.

Fliers and Portrait Graphics

My skill doesn’t end at horizontal graphics either! Below I’ve arranged a sample of some of my portrait graphics, used in everything from social media to in-person posters.

Misc. Graphics

Sometimes a project requires more than just a horizontal or vertical standard graphic. For those situations, I’ve had to adapt and create new graphics. Below are just some of the graphics I’ve made for those situations - Email+, slideshows, and more!
